Expectations
What are you expecting to see in the film in terms of narrative & characters
Intense with few characters and an immediate situation to resolve
Does the short film follow the three act structure?
If not what does it uses?
Doesn’t really follow the three Act structure as it follows the same situation- yet you can say that the three acts can be seen within the narrative of the woman and her son in the house
List three momenta where the drama of the short film stands out. Make reference to microelements & representation
DIALOGUE
The repetition of the lines asking for the callers address at both the beginning and the end emphasis that this is a cyclic, nonstop process that the operator does every day. This is emphasised by the unchanging mise-en-scen and cinematography
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
Change from the more cold and cynical dialogue of asking for an address to the more person conversation about the woman’s son shows that the Operator is actually human and cares
DRAMATIC DEVICES
The sound from the other side of the phone helps push the narrative forward and add tension
How do the microelements of the short film generate preferred & alternate meanings?
Preferred meanings – The phone call cutting off means that the woman and son were successfully rescued, and the woman hung up
Alternative meaning – The phone call cutting off suggests that the something bad may have possibly happened to the woman before she could be rescued
